W&H turbines are very highly specialized.
OEM W&H turbines are typically priced at above $300, each turbine individually machine balanced at the factory to ensure quiet, smooth operation with maximum torque at minimum speed. High speed handpieces capable of operating at lower speeds (<350,000 rpm) produce much less noise, and last much longer than those operating at a screaming 450,000 rpm.
W&H Turbines – Balanced Vs. Unbalanced
Balancing is a very important step in creating the best quality dental handpiece turbines. With that said, many replacement turbines are available for W&H Synea, Trend, Alegra, and Top Light handpieces. Some will be factory balanced and some not. Unbalanced turbines will still operate efficiently with excellent speed and torque, provided good quality bearings are used, but may produce a different pitch than you are use to. That’s not to say that aftermarket W&H turbines will not provide good service. Many are very good turbines at deeply discounted prices, sometimes one fourth the cost of OEM W&H turbines. Many dealers offer a 6 month warranty on their replacement turbines, which implies they are using quality components. Look for ceramic bearings, when available, and don’t be afraid to question sellers about the components they employ to create the final product.
